Forest City featured on WBRE

Monday, October 20th, 2008

We’re on a media roll these days (man, that would be a great pun if we were trying to become the Sandwich Capital). WBRE visited Forest City recently to talk to Mayor Nick Cost and some of the ladies in the church basement who were hard at work making those delicious pierogies.

Forest City has been named one of five finalists in the competition for Capital of the Pierogy Pocket for 2009 sponsored by Mrs. T’s Pierogies.

The winner of the title and a $10,000 prize will be selected based on the materials submitted to demonstrate a town’s pierogie pride, as well as the number of online votes received at www.pierogypocket.com. Voting will be open through Oct. 24.

Forest City is up against Binghamton, N.Y.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Elmira Heights, N.Y.; and Whiting, Ind.

This year marks Mrs. T’s Pierogies third annual search for the Capital of the Pierogy Pocket. Last year’s winner was Binghamton.

From the Forest City News…

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Following the gluttonous good time that was had last year, the Pierogi Eating Contest will be making it’s triumphant return to this year’s slate of Old Home Week activities. The event will take place at 3:00 p.m. on the afternoon of August 2 immediately following the parade.

The rules of the contest remain the same; participants will have ten minutes to eat as many savory pierogi as possible. The top three eaters will get prizes, with the champion receiving a nominal cash purse. Entry into the contest is $10. All entrants will receive a snazzy 2008 Old Home Week Pierogi Eating Contest T-shirt. The shirts will also be for sale to the general public during OHW for $10.

Additionally, the contest organizers will be submitting a proposal on behalf of Forest City to Mrs. T’s Capital of the Pierogy Pocket of America contest. The contest, held annually, recognizes the town in the “Pierogy Pocket” (recognized by Mrs. T’s as the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest regions of the country) that best exemplifies its passion for pierogi. The winning town receives $10,000. Petitions stating Forest City’s love of pierogi will be available at multiple locations on Main Street in the coming weeks.

Pierogi Eating Contest entry forms are now available online at http://oldhomeweek.info/. For more information about the contest, contact Kim Coleman at 570-650-7267, Jesse Graytock at 570-446-3353, or email the pierogi team at pierogies@oldhomeweek.info.
