About the Old Home Week Pierogi Eating Contest

contestants1

WHAT: It’s a Pierogi Eating Contest. Whoever eats the most pierogies in 10 minutes wins.
WHEN: Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. (after the parade)
WHY: Because your Eastern European ancestors would be proud. Also, all proceeds go to a good cause.

$15 gets you entered. It also gets you all the pierogi, butter and onions you can cram into your innards in the span of 10 minutes. Kielbasa, halupki, haluski, and antacids and beer are not included, so bring your own if your stomach is up to it. Prizes will be awarded to the top three eaters, with the champion receiving the vaunted Brian Richards Memorial Pierogi Trophy.

All entrants will receive a 2009 OHW Pieorgi Eating Contest T-shirt, which looks extremely flattering on distended abdomens and soaks up butter like an ace.

All entrants must be 18 years of age or older. (Sorry youngsters, only adults possess the responsibility and wherewithal necessary to eat enough food in one sitting to feed a small African village).

History

The idea for a pierogi eating contest at Old Home Week was first tossed around during Old Home Week of 2006. Turns out it’s not the kind of thing you can put together in a few hours. So we kept drinking and put it on the back burner until 2007, where it was a huge success. It was successful again in 2008, drawing huge crowds (including the legendary Pierogi Man) and raising money for continued construction of the Kennedy Park Disc Golf Course. We had so much fun bringing this event to Old Home Week that we plan to keep it going for the foreseeable future.
